Welcome to Youth As Resources! Youth As Resources (YAR) is
a community-based program that provides small grants to young people to design
and carry out service-learning projects. These projects address social problems,
resolve community issues, and are governed by local community service projects.
Through these projects, young people in classrooms, neighborhood centers, youth
organizations, community foundations and clubs tackle a range of social issues
of concern--health, housing, education, the environment, drug abuse, gangs,
illiteracy, crime and many others. YAR projects must be designed by youth and
supported by adults.
Youth As Resources was developed by the National Crime
Prevention Council (NCPC) in 1987 with funding from the Lily Endowment, Inc.
Youth As Resources has over 70 local programs throughout the United States, as
well as international sites in Canada, New Zealand and Poland. In 1994, NCPC
launched a year-long initiative in 15 Midwest cities that had been affected by
major flooding. Two Kansas sites, Manhattan and Greenbush, were funded through
the flood relief efforts. After the initial year of funding, the Regional
Prevention Center of Northeast Kansas sustained the local Manhattan program by
generating additional funding. Currently, the RPC houses the only YAR site in
Kansas.
Youth As Resources exists to develop character and meaning
in the lives of youth; encouraging them to take ownership and contribute to
their own communities. YAR believes that all youth can act as leaders and
decision makers in meeting critical community needs.
Youth As Resources is expanding! Because YAR has
been such a success in Riley County, programs have been established in Geary,
Pottawatomie, and Wabaunsee Counties as well.
